When undertaking a wet room installation what are some of the main aspect’s bathroom fitters need to consider?
Most wet rooms are installed as an upgrade from an existing bath or step in tray. The level access shower reduces the risk of a fall by removing the need to step into either a bath or shower tray.
Regarding using a wastewater pump when this is needed the following needs to be considered:
- Determine the location of the pump and shower. This will depend on the existing waste pipe and where the shower area is to be located.
- The pump needs to be within 3mtrs of the gulley (2mtrs for mixer installations).
- The pump may be mounted in a void, a boxing or in the adjacent airing cupboard. In all cases the pump needs to be accessible. Sometimes wall panels are used to facilitate access to the pump.
- Where flow switches or flow sensors are used these need to be accessible.
When it comes to drainage what are the key things for installers to focus on?
Drainage for a wet room can be a challenge where gravity drainage is not an option. An existing bath or step in tray will have the drainage outlet above the floor level. The Whale wastewater pump provides a solution by using a shallow gulley and small-bore pipe that sits within the screed. The pump then sucks the water from the gulley and discharges it into the wastewater outlet.
It is important to use plastic pipe from the gulley to the pump with swept bends under the floor. This permits a clear run for the water with no turbulence and hence reduces risk of blockages. In the rare instance where a blockage should occur the pipe may easily be rodded.
Do installers need to consider the type of shower being used in the wet room?
The type of shower depends on the requirements of the homeowner or the housing association. For vulnerable users and those with sensitive skin a thermostatic shower is recommended. There are BEAB care certified electric showers designed to protect the user from scalding. For mixer showers in a domestic shower a TMV 2 certified shower would be selected. Where carers are giving assistance or when users are seated during showering a longer shower rail and hose is needed.
If an electric shower is being used Mira offer the Mira Advance Flex Extra thermostatic shower. This has the added benefit of connecting to the Whale instant Match using Bluetooth. This speeds up installation as no flow switch is required in the pipework. The pump and transformer come pre-mounted on a base plate for the convenience of the installer.
How has the Instant Match Premium been designed to support wet room installations?
The Whale Instant Match pumps match the pumping rate to the flow rate of the shower. This reduces suction noise at the gulley giving the user an improved showering experience.
The Instant Match Premium has been designed for Mixer shower installations. The pump is mounted on antivibration mounts and is connected to the pipework using flexible pipework. This resolves the issue when the pump is mounted on a stud wall, the vibration is absorbed before being transferred to the wall and causing the wall to act as a sounding board. This is necessary as mixer showers have a greater flow rate than electric showers causing more pump vibration.
Self-cleaning Sika flow sensors are used to measure the flow rate. These do not require a filter and have sapphire bearings on which the turbine rotates.
Can Instant Match Premium (IMP) be paired with a solution to shut-off water supply if pump performance is compromised?
Whale with their Whale Sense product can provide the same anti flood feature as Thermostatic electric showers. All electric Thermostatic showers have a built-in solenoid that closes when not in use. Whale sense is a solenoid driver for mixer showers.
Whale Sense when used with the IMP gives an added level of protection. In situations where there is no power to the pump the solenoids will remain closed, preventing flooding. To activate the
Whale Sense a PIR in the bathroom is used to sense the presence of the user which then opens the solenoids. After the user leaves the bathroom, the solenoids will close after the preset time on the PIR.
The Whale Sense product may also be used without the IMP as a whole bathroom (excluding the WC Cistern) device to prevent water running from taps or showers that have been left on.
